The walls of Serenity finally came to a quiet. Life returned to normal, or as normal as it had ever been. Of course, in a world where secrets were all that you had that was yours alone, to have them suddenly out in the open was not good for anyone. Everyone walked the hallways as if they were nothing more than ghosts.

Upon returning to Serenity, Mal had been accosted by a very angry Inara. Neither of them had burst into song, but the sound of their screams and Inara's tears could be heard in just about every corner of Serenity. A few hours later, Mal burst out of Inara's shuttle as it took off, and growled something about picking it up once she had settled at Guild headquarters. He locked himself up in his quarters; Zoe expected that he wouldn't talk (or sing) to anyone for a couple of weeks. The crew may not have all been Readers, but the Captain's pain was so all encompassing, it seemed to pulsate out of his room and fill the ship with deep depression. Wash could be heard muttering that he had been much happier with the whole bursting into flame idea.

Though, in the face of sadness, there is always some light. Simon and Kaylee had resolved their differences, and managed to preserve their friendship. But that was all it was, and maybe all it ever would be; a friendship. Kaylee just...wasn't quite ready to forgive Simon. He had devoted himself, body and soul, to his little sister. She cursed the world and the Academy, and anyone who had prevented Simon from noticing her, standing there with engine grease and a heart of gold which she was saving for him. But she was done; she had cried too many bitter tears over that man to keep up with it now.

Sheppard Book became very quiet after the Red Demon left the ship, keeping mostly to himself. His eyes drifted over to the portals, gazing longingly out into the black. When asked, he would chuckle that he was simply lost in his thoughts. Jayne commented that he was hoping to help the Sheppard find his way back, and was told that Book didn't think he'd ever be able to; not to this place anyway. Jayne didn't like ominous talk like this, went off to lift weights.

But the aftermath of Sweet's reign was not entirely negative. As the last of his spell faded, a soft techno beat could be heard echoing over the walls of Serenity. Those who searched for it were out of luck finding it, but if they listened closely, they could hear the words that were echoing along with it.

The crew never did find out who it was.

---

It was River, hiding in one of her usual hiding places, haunted by memories that she didn't understand and couldn't place, and feelings she couldn't comprehend. Though, for the first time, these feelings didn't frighten her; they excited her to no end. Her mind was occupied by images of a smirky blond with a pale face, gazing into her brown eyes with blue ones so vibrant that River felt as though she would be able to see the entire universe reflected in them. And she sang to him.

"I've got my sights set on you, and I'm ready to aim
I have a heart that will, never be tamed.
I knew you were something special, when you spoke my name,
Now I can't wait, to see you again."

River smirked, in spite of herself, attempting to reflect Xavier's style of grin. She pouted a little when she failed, and tried again. She sighed; perhaps it would come with practice. She sang more.

"I've got a way of knowing, when something is right,"

She frowned a little bit. Though in usual situations that would be an accurate statement, her usual abilities of picking up on stray thoughts of others to enforce her already insightful notions was useless in this situation; she couldn't read his mind.

"But I feel like I must have known you, in another life,"

Even since before she had met him, she had known Xavier. His face haunted her dreams, destroying people, being destroyed. She had images of him killing her, several times over. Sometimes in a dark barn, with fire and sounds of fighting in the distance. Sometimes on an old age train of sorts, under ground, with strange shapes and colours painted onto the wall.

And sometimes, though she would never tell Simon, she had dreamt about loving him.

"'cause I felt this deep connection, when you looked in my eyes.
Now I can't wait, to see you again."

River grinned, imagining what their next encounter would be like, hoping that it would go better than their last.

"The last time I freaked out, I just kept looking down
I stu-stu-stuttered when you asked me what I'm thinking 'bout
Felt like I couldn't breathe, started to shiver,
that's when my Captain said, "Oh she's just being River."
The next time we hang out, I will redeem myself
my heart can't rest 'til then,
woah-woah
I, I can't wait, to see you again."

River paused briefly. Different thoughts had been occurring to her all day. She was having strange visions of a future to come, the details of which were a bit sketchy, but she was certain of one thing:

"I got this crazy feeling, deep inside
You'll call and ask to see my, another time,
A story is unfolding, you and me intertwined,"

River smirked again,
"You can't wait, to see me again.

The last time I freaked out, I just kept looking down
I stu-stu-stuttered when you asked me what I'm thinking 'bout
Felt like I couldn't breathe, started to shiver,
that's when my Captain said, "Oh she's just being River."
The next time we hang out, I will redeem myself
my heart can't rest 'til then,
woah-woah
I, I can't wait, to see you again."

River grinned devilishly. No matter what, no matter how many people she had to fight, or how far she had to travel, she would see him again. She would find him.

"I got my sights set on you, and I'm ready to aim.

She sighed contentedly, sure on her purpose.

"Woah-woah,
I, I can't wait, to see you again."

And as the song faded, River felt the last of the spell leave the ship. No more wild dancing, no more endless secret sharing. They would learn to deal with the consequences, and they would recover; they always did. River could still feel a nagging sense of foreboding in the back of her mind; some of their hardest battles were still to come. But that was a problem best left for later. With a gentle sigh, she left her hiding place, moving carefully in the direction of the infirmary.

She would get better. And then she would find Xaver. That was a promise.
